•• CLAIRE, THE PERSONAL MUSIC COACH — DEMONSTRATION DISKS ••
• System Requirements: Macintosh 68020 family computers or better, System 7 or higher, 2 MB RAM (4 MB recommended), hard disk, Apple microphone or other digitizer (such as the MacRecorder). A math coprocessor (FPU) is recommended. To be sure that Claire is optimized for your computer, ALWAYS INSTALL CLAIRE FROM THE DEMO DISK - do not copy through a network or make direct copies of the Claire demo.
• INSTALLATION & TAKING A TOUR
STEP 1 — Before you turn your computer on, make sure your microphone/digitizer is plugged in.
STEP 2 — Insert the Demo Claire™ disk, double-click the Installer.
STEP 3 — Click OK when the Installer screen appears, then click Install — follow the instructions that appear on your screen during the installation process.
STEP 4 — After installation, open the Claire folder (on your hard disk) and double-click the Claire icon to launch the software.
STEP 5 — Select New User... from the File menu. Enter your name, age and musical skills level, then click OK.
STEP 6 — After you’ve created your file, Claire will ask you if you would like to take a tour. This introduction will show you the basics of working with Claire. Click OK to continue.
STEP 7 — The tour concludes in the Practice Help window. Click any icon or topic for more information — take your time!
Once you've finished exploring the Practice Help window, select Practice from the Windows menu. Click PLAY to begin an automatic exercise demonstration (NOTE: this sequence of exercises is designed to illustrate the types of exercises available in Claire — it is not structured as a pedagogic progression).
• OTHER THINGS TO TRY
Do an exercise, then select Review Last from the Log menu. Claire will imitate your performance of the exercise.
After you’ve done a few exercises, select History from the Log menu (make sure Auto-Curriculum is ON). History chronicles each exercise you performed and can be exported for printing.
Select Intonation Profile from the Log menu. Intonation Profile graphically displays your aural acuity, note by note, within the range you’ve practiced.
You can browse exercises by turning Auto-Curriculum OFF — click the Auto-Curriculum button or select Auto-Curriculum from the Play menu. Select the Exercises menu (the Exercises menu is unavailable when Auto-Curriculum is on) to view different exercises. Note that in the demo version, exercises are only available for practice with the Auto-Curriculum ON.
• WHAT’S NOT IN THE DEMO DISK
The Claire demo includes all the features of the full version, with several exceptions:
1. While you can display any exercise, you can only practice exercises within the automatic exercise demonstration (Auto-Curriculum ON) — the full version of Claire allows manual selection and practice of all exercises.
2. The demonstration is limited to 20 steps — the full version has over 500 steps structured as a pedagogic sequence.
3. Exercises can only be performed in Fixed Do (if this is unusual for you, select C Major from the Keys menu) — the full version includes the choice of Movable Do or Fixed Do prompts and sounds, including higher quality sound in selected keys.
4. While you can create a file, you cannot save your results or settings — you can save as many user files as you want with the full version.
5. The Metronome is limited to 15 seconds — no timer in the full version.
• CAUTION!
Check to make sure your digitizer is plugged in before you start your computer. Plugging anything into your Macintosh while it's running is not recommended.
• OTHER THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR
If you have an accelerator board, make sure it is compatible with your digitizer.
Background processing such as printing, network activity, automatic compression and file sharing can also cause slight processing delays. Like any teacher, Claire wants your (and your computer's) full attention.
